Step-by-step instructions for passing the guard. No email required — just use them.
When to use: Opponent has deep half guard or is framing hard.
Steps: (1) Underhook on the far side. (2) Base on your forearms, shoulders above opponent's shoulders. (3) Step on the hip with your inside foot. (4) Stack weight through their chest, not just down. (5) Walk your feet forward as they flatten out. (6) Pin the far leg with your knee and step over to side control.
Key coaching cue: "Drive through their chest, not their hips." If your shoulders are above their shoulders, gravity works for you.
When to use: Opponent is sitting back, trying to recover guard.
Steps: (1) Grab the far-side collar with your free hand. (2) Knee-cut toward the far side. (3) Use your posted leg to drag their leg across. (4) Slide through to side control before they recover.
Key coaching cue: "Touch their far hip with your chest." This prevents them from turning away and recovering half guard.
When to use: Opponent has a strong closed guard or spider guard.
Steps: (1) Break one grip at a time. (2) Post one hand on their far hip (over). (3) Duck under their other arm (under). (4) Your head stays between their arms. (5) Step up to your feet — use your weight to flatten them. (6) Pin their shoulders down and step over.
Key coaching cue: "Get your head through first." If your head stays between their arms, they can't break you down.
When to use: Opponent is playing open guard with lasso or spider.
Steps: (1) Both arms under both their legs. (2) Pull their hips toward you. (3) Your shoulders replace their legs in their guard. (4) Walk around to one side, keeping pressure on their thighs. (5) Clear each leg as you pass.
Key coaching cue: "Keep your chin on their hip." This maintains the angle and prevents them from framing you off.
When to use: Opponent has butterfly guard or is sitting to open guard.
Steps: (1) Control both wrists with one hand (pummel to get the angle). (2) Step to the side with your outside leg. (3) Use their posts against them — push their posted leg across. (4) Your body follows the path their leg clears. (5) Smooth transition to side control.
Key coaching cue: "Be the bull, not the matador." Commit to the step and control the pace.
